Feature Walls

RENO CONUNDRUM: Repaintall white, or add a feature wall?

Doesn’t everyone love a feature wall? Who doesn’t love a pop of colour? Loads of people apparently!

Despite design magazines and YouTube channels being filled with stunning interiors with rich colour palettes throughout, turns out most people recommend repainting with tried and tested white….especially
when renovating to sell.

Seems kind of boring to me. I thought a bold bedroom feature wall would be a simple, cost effectiveway to add dimension and a touch of elegance to a property otherwise lacking in a wow factor. But when I surveyed inner westies recently, there was a resounding “Pass” from the majority of respondents.

Their reasoning makes perfect sense, of course. Here are some of the comments:

  • Broad appeal: “We recently sold and the 3 real estate agents that we spoke to said to paint our walls the most
inoffensive shade of white that we could - this way it appeals to 95% of the market.” (Nick)
  • Blank canvas: “I think if you planto sell leave them white. Whoever buys will have a clean slate to work with
rather than having to paint over a colour.” (Jessica)
  • Polarising: “If you weren’t sellingI’d say go for it, but it can be polarising for buyers.” (Rachel)
  • Play it safe: “If you are setting upto sell I would keep it as safe as possible. Feature walls are risky, some might love it but others will hate it.”(Deborah)

….and numerous othervariations on the above themes.

So why are feature walls a thing at all? Easy! Some people do love it.

  • “Feature wall as a touch of colour sounds a nicechange.” (Melissa)
  • “My bedroom I purposefully made a"soothing" cave... So it also comes down to what you want your bedroom to feel like.” (Alice)

I guess opinions really are like the proverbial. Everyone has one. The trick is to know when to pay heed, andwhen to ignore it.

VERDICT: White white white, and then people can do their own if they want. (Thanks Breanne!)
